General Information

The Netherlands has a surface area of 42.528 km2 of which 18 % is water. The coastline stretches for 451 km. and the land border for 1027 km.

It is a monarchy which counts 16,5 million inhabitants spread over its twelf provinces. Amsterdam is its capital and largest city with 750.000 inhabitants. Rotterdam is the second largest city with 600.000 inhabitants. Apeldoorn is situated towards the east in the centre of the country and has 160.000 inhabitants. In the Netherlands there is an average of 482 inhabitants per square km.

Passport

EU Nationals visiting the Netherlands require a valid Passport or official identification document for entry into the country. Non-EU Nationals may require Visas. Information on exact requirements should be obtained from your local Dutch embassy or tourist office.

Official Language

The National language in the Netherlands is Dutch. The official conference language during the European Games will be English.

Climate

The Netherlands Enjoys a temperate, maritime climate. January and february are the coldest months and temperatures average 3 degrees C. July and August are the warmest and temperatures usually range between 20-25 degrees C.

Plentiful ATMs are to be found in all towns and cities.

Shopping

The opening hours of most shops in the Netherlands are 8.30 AM to 6:00 PM. There is late night shopping (until 9:00 PM) on Thursday night in Apeldoorn and on Friday night in its surrounding areas.
